DANCE ETIQUETTE
The behavior in which a man should treat a woman from the moment he asks her permission to dance and escorts her to the dance floor. A true man turns into an elegant gentleman and sweeps the beautiful lady of her feet. After the dance, the gentleman will walk the lady back to her table/seat and thank her for a wonderful time in the dance floor.

Sonny is a prime example how a young man shows "RESPECT" to the young lady.

WHAT IS MY PASSION?

I recently had the opportunity to attend an event at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio with 2,000 senior citizens.
These people participate in programs at over 75 nutrition centers across the city.  The centers provide a safe place for the seniors to socialize during the day and also offer nutritious meals to participants, many of whom are on low fixed incomes.
What inspired me to attend the event was my opportunity as a dance ambassador with "Dance Therapy- Dance Your Depression Away!" Inc.  When the music begins to play, the seniors begin to sway–some men and women danced as couples, some ladies joined hands with other female friends and some individuals just danced on their own.
There was no worry or wondering about what other people might be thinking.  They just followed the flow of their hearts.  This is the true beauty of the elderly and totally inspiring to me.
Some of the participants were wheel-chair bound but that didn’t stop them from moving and shaking the parts that would move.  They were involved.
As a dance ambassador, I work at one nutrition center once a week.  I arrive around 9:30 a.m. to set up the music and get ready for the class that begins at 10.  As 10 a.m. comes close, I start calling out loudly to potential participants that we’re about to begin.
People may hesitate to get involved because of some ache or pain, but I don’t listen to their stories; just keep the energy moving and pretty soon they’ve forgotten their troubles as they begin to stretch and participate to whatever level of involvement their bodies allow.
After the warm up session, we begin to dance.  I’ll offer my hand to one lady and we’ll dance around the room.  Other couples and singles join in.  The level of involvement builds.  By the end of the hour, the energy in the room is very, very high. When I’m ready to leave, everybody’s in a whole new level of enthusiasm.  It’s very fulfilling for me.
I began my dancing with some classes being offered by Jorge Alonso Perez, the founder of "Dance Therapy-Dance Your Depression Away!"  Inc.: a non-profit organization to assist others (anyone welcome) to dance Latino styles.  I continued to be involved in his classes and when he mentioned that more dance ambassadors were needed to work at the nutrition centers, I agreed to work with one of the centers.   I get so much from this opportunity.  It really provides an avenue for me to help people spiritually.  Sometimes I talk with individuals one-to-one, but the main goal is to help people uplift their energy through involvement.
Most of my life, I've had unsettling  feelings about dancing.  A journeyman friend inspired me to break through this barrier of thinking, and try it anyway.  I did and this eventually led me to find myself more fully through the joys of dancing.  I would recommend dancing to anyone.  It is a life changing experience.  if there is any reader who has always had the urge, but not the courage, go for it.  With clear motives, it is the ultimate in social skill building.   There is something to what inspired Jorge to develop his great program.  It is truly impossible to dance and feel any level of depression at the same time.  I feel like I chose wisely.

What Has Dance Therapy Done for Me

This is such a simple question with a complicated answer.  An answer that I am beginning to explore but I have yet to come to a complete resolution.  My personal history with Dance Therapy began in 6/05.  A grade school friend of mine, named Frances, introduced me to the concept of Dance Therapy.  She lured me to attend with her with the hope of learning to dance.  She explained to me that it was an interesting group and that a new dance was being taught each month.  I told her I was interested as dancing has always been an interest of mine but I had not had the time or should I say, I never made the time to learn.  This was certainly a great opportunity to learn.  I continued to attend in spite of the fact that Frances no longer chose to attend.  I was able to form new friendships, be around people and enjoy leaning something new.

It wasn’t until after I started to attend Dance Therapy that I found out that Dance Therapy was much more that just dancing.  Dance Therapy is about bringing people in the community together to dance and deal with their depression.  Depression is debilitating and devastating condition that can lead any individual to commit suicide.  It has no boundaries and can affect any gender, race, age group or economic level.  What an ingenious idea to have people dance and forget their problems for a while.

When I initially joined Dance Therapy I was scared, unsure and wondered whether I would be able to learn.  I was scared, as I only knew Frances and no one else in the group.  Being the shy and introvert individual that I am, I was concerned about how others in the group would accept me or even talk to me.  Yes, it was about Me, Me, Me, Me.  There is this pressing need for others to accept me.  This is a problem as I have a problem accepting me for who I am.  I hate the idea of being shy and others pointing out or describing me as shy.  This is one of the things people do and it burns me up.  I guess shy has a very bad connotation for me.  I think the word shy is a very negative term for me.  I have other qualities aside from being shy but this seems to STAND OUT.  I hate the idea of others pointing this out to me.

What has Dance Therapy done for me?  Dance therapy has been a catalyst in bringing me out of my shell.  I have gradually become more at ease with myself.  I find that I will now attempt to try something new without the need or the pressure to make it work perfectly.  I know we are ourselves’ worst critic and this plays a major role on whether we attempt to try new things or not.  It is just that I dislike making a fool of myself.  I find that I am able to at least follow with some sense of accomplishment.  Dance therapy has given me a positive attitude in life.  It has helped me to see things from a different perspective.  It is not about me but about being there for others, giving others encouragement and helping them when they are feeling unsure.

Dance Therapy has helped me to challenge myself and just do the best that I can.  Dance therapy has been an AWESOME awakening.  It has helped me to “touch people’s lives and hopefully make a difference.”  I am still struggling but feel that there is a higher power that is leading me.  I am trying to make some sense of this but I am still unsure.  I keep asking myself but I still do not know what is happening to me, but it definitely feels good.  I will continue in this quest and long to become a better individual.

What is my Passion in Life?

I will begin by defining the word Passion.  Passion for me is something that drives me, motivates and inspires me to do something.  There is an intense emotion about working for a cause or an idea.  I would say that my passion in life has been working with and helping people.  I devoted my life to helping adults and children during my 27 years of service to the State of Texas.  I felt passionate about helping people who were afflicted by various social problems.  This included alcoholism, mental illness, substance abuse, emotional abuse, domestic violence and child abuse.  My responsibility was to work with families and provide them with resources necessary to make changes.  I had to assess and determine whether children were safe in their home or whether it was in their best interest to be removed from their home.  It is my belief that people deserve an opportunity to change.  It is also true that some people are capable of changing while others do not have the mental capacity to change.  Nonetheless, individuals deserve an opportunity to prove whether they are capable of making the necessary changes.

I am a true believer that children deserve to live with their birth family provided that their family is able to meet their basic needs.  If there is a breakdown in the family system that impedes the child’s development and safety, then necessary steps need to be taken to place the child/children in alternate care.

As a social worker, my role was to advocate for the child’s needs and to reunify the child with his/her parents whenever possible.  Yes, there were some cases where the children were able to return home but there were others where steps had to be taken to terminate parental rights.  This was a difficult process as I had to prove my case and show what efforts had been made to help the family.  Oftentimes, it is difficult to work with people who do not want us in their lives.  They are so self-absorbed in their own problems that they cannot see beyond their own needs.  Yet there are others who do want help but they do not have the skills to obtain the necessary information to make changes.  This being the case, one must be of service and make attempts to help them in whatever way possible.  It is so rewarding to see how some families are able to work toward making the necessary changes and accomplishing their goals.

When I retired, I found myself somewhat lost.  I questioned myself and wondered what I was going to do with my life.  I felt my work had consumed my life and now I no longer had this.  It was not until a friend introduced me to Dance Therapy that I found a new passion.  My new passion, became learning how to dance.  It is not so much the idea of leaning how to dance, but helping others in the process of learning.  Yes learning to dance is important to me because one must know what one is doing in order to teach others.  Dancing has become an avenue to a bigger goal.  My passion is to work with individuals and help them by offering a gleam of hope.  It has been my experience that some of the Senior citizens are able to open up and they are able to talk about their life history.  During my time at the nutrition centers I have come into contact with numerous individuals who have various passions.  I am astonished by the Seniors’ spirituality and their gratitude to God.  They are thankful to God and give praise to him for every moment of  their lives.  I would likewise like to grow in my spirituality and have a closer relationship with God.

Working at the nutrition center has been a blessing for me.  It has given me a new beginning and an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.  My new passion is very fulfilling  and rewarding.
